Overview

The Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is one of the largest and most recognizable sharks in the world – a powerful, opportunistic predator that inhabits tropical and warm-temperate ocean waters worldwide. Named for the distinctive tiger-like stripe pattern that decorates the back and sides of juveniles – which fades as the shark matures but never disappears entirely – the tiger shark is a formidable and unmistakable presence in the ocean. Adults typically reach 3 to 4.5 meters in length and weigh 400 to 900 kilograms, making the species one of the largest requiem sharks (family Carcharhinidae). The tiger shark has a characteristically broad, blunt snout, a high, sickle-shaped first dorsal fin, and distinctive serrated teeth that are curved and notched like a steak knife – an adaptation for cutting through the hard shells and bones of its varied prey.

The tiger shark is one of the most indiscriminate eaters in the animal kingdom, consuming virtually anything that it can fit in its mouth. Its diet includes bony fish, cartilaginous fish (including smaller sharks and rays), sea turtles, seabirds, marine mammals (including dolphins and seals), squid, crabs, lobsters, jellyfish, and a remarkable variety of non-nutritive items – including license plates, bags, shoes, and other garbage – that it apparently ingests by mistake or out of curiosity. This scavenging behavior has earned the tiger shark the unflattering nickname “the garbage can of the sea,” and the species is responsible for a significant proportion of shark attacks on humans, a disproportionate number of which are fatal.

Habitat and Distribution

The Tiger Shark has a circumglobal distribution in tropical and warm-temperate waters, occurring in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. The species is most common in tropical waters but ranges from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean in the west Atlantic to Japan, Australia, and Hawaii in the Indo-Pacific. Unlike many shark species that are restricted to particular ocean basins or depths, tiger sharks are highly mobile and opportunistic, moving in response to water temperature, prey availability, and reproductive needs. Satellite tagging studies have shown that individual tiger sharks can travel thousands of kilometers – crossing entire ocean basins – in a single year.

Tiger sharks are primarily coastal sharks, most commonly encountered around tropical islands, coral reefs, lagoons, and near river mouths and estuaries where rivers discharge nutrient-rich freshwater into the ocean. However, the species is also found in open ocean environments and has been recorded at depths of up to 900 meters. In tropical waters, tiger sharks tend to remain near the surface during the day and descend to deeper water at night, following the vertical migrations of their prey. The species’ tolerance for a wide range of salinities allows it to enter brackish and even freshwater environments, and individual tiger sharks have been recorded ascending rivers far from the ocean.

Life History

The tiger shark is one of the most productive of all shark species, reflecting its status as an apex predator that faces relatively little predation pressure as an adult. Females are viviparous – giving birth to live young – and produce litters of 10 to 80 pups after a gestation period of approximately 14 to 16 months. Newborn tiger sharks measure approximately 50 to 75 centimeters in length and are immediately independent, swimming away from the mother at birth and beginning to hunt small prey within their first year of life. Females give birth in shallow coastal waters, which provide the newborn pups with abundant prey and protection from larger predators during their most vulnerable early life stages.

Tiger sharks grow slowly and mature late: males reach sexual maturity at approximately 7 to 8 years of age and 2.5 to 2.9 meters in length, while females mature at approximately 8 to 10 years and 3.3 to 3.7 meters. The maximum recorded age for a tiger shark is approximately 27 years, though some studies suggest individuals may live considerably longer. Like all sharks, tiger sharks lack the bony skeleton characteristic of most other fish and instead have a skeleton made of cartilage – a flexible, lightweight material that is both strong and flexible. The species’ teeth are replaced continuously throughout its life, with individual sharks producing thousands of teeth over their lifetime.

Conservation

The Tiger Shark is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, reflecting population declines in parts of its range due to targeted and incidental fishing pressure. The species is captured in commercial and recreational fisheries throughout its range – both intentionally, for its meat, fins, liver oil, and cartilage, and accidentally, as bycatch in longline, gillnet, and trawl fisheries targeting other species. The tiger shark’s slow growth, late maturity, and extended reproductive cycle make it particularly vulnerable to overfishing: populations that are depleted by fishing pressure can take decades to recover.

The tiger shark plays an important ecological role as an apex predator in tropical and warm-temperate marine ecosystems, helping to regulate the populations of prey species and maintain the health and balance of marine food webs. The species is also an important tourist attraction: shark diving operations in locations including Hawaii, Fiji, and the Bahamas generate significant revenue from tourists eager to swim with these magnificent predators. Conservation efforts focus on improving the management of shark fisheries – including the implementation of catch limits, fishing gear modifications to reduce bycatch, and the expansion of marine protected areas that prohibit or restrict shark fishing – and on improving public understanding of the tiger shark’s ecological importance.
