Introduction

The Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) is a chondrostean fish representing one of the oldest vertebrate lineages alive today, with ancestors stretching back approximately 200 million years to the Mesozoic era. Endemic to the eastern coast of North America and the Gulf of Mexico, this massive, slow-growing fish has survived multiple mass extinction events only to become endangered in modern times. Once abundant enough to support major commercial fisheries supplying the world’s caviar market, Atlantic sturgeon populations remain a fraction of their historical sizes. The species is now a flagship for riverine and coastal conservation in North America.

Taxonomy

Acipenser oxyrinchus belongs to the family Acipenseridae, characterized by cartilaginous skeletons, bony scutes arranged in five longitudinal rows, and a protrusible mouth lacking teeth. Two subspecies are recognized: A. o. oxyrinchus along the North American Atlantic coast and A. o. desotoi in the Gulf of Mexico. Genetic studies have identified multiple distinct population segments within each subspecies, each representing an evolutionary unit requiring independent management. The closest relative is the European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio), from which it diverged during the Pleistocene.

Physical Characteristics

Atlantic sturgeon are among the largest freshwater fish in North America, reaching lengths of up to 4.3 meters and weights exceeding 350 kilograms. Their elongated body is covered in five rows of bony scutes: one dorsal, two lateral, and two ventral. Between the scutes, the skin is smooth and scaleless. The distinctive pointed rostrum houses four sensory barbels used to detect prey on the seafloor. Adults lack teeth, using a toothless, tube-shaped, protrusible mouth to create suction and draw benthic prey from sediments. Individuals can live for more than 60 years.

Atlantic sturgeon are anadromous, spending most of their adult lives in coastal marine waters but returning to freshwater rivers to spawn. Spawning occurs in deep, fast-flowing river sections with clean, gravel-bottomed substrates, including the Hudson, Delaware, and Saint Lawrence rivers. After hatching, juveniles remain in freshwater and estuarine areas for 2 to 6 years before migrating to the ocean. Adults occupy coastal shelf waters from Canada to Florida, moving offshore in winter and returning to nearshore zones in summer. Dam construction and dredging have blocked access to historical spawning habitat in many river systems.

Diet

Atlantic sturgeon are benthic feeders, consuming aquatic insect larvae, oligochaete worms, and crustaceans as juveniles, shifting to marine worms, shrimp, crabs, small fish, and mollusks as adults. Their toothless, protrusible mouth creates powerful suction to draw prey from sediments, with sensory barbels helping to locate food in low-visibility conditions. Feeding is most active in summer and diminishes during winter offshore migration. Males reach sexual maturity at 5 to 19 years and females at 7 to 33 years, reflecting their slow growth and low metabolic rate. Reproduction

Atlantic sturgeon have one of the most extended reproductive life histories of any North American fish. Spawning occurs in spring when water temperatures reach 14–21 degrees Celsius. Large females produce 400,000 to 4 million eggs per event, deposited over clean gravel substrate. Eggs incubate for 3 to 7 days before hatching. Atlantic sturgeon are iteroparous, spawning multiple times over their long lives, with individual females typically spawning every 2 to 6 years. The combination of late maturity and low reproductive frequency makes populations extremely vulnerable to overexploitation and slow to recover.

Conservation

Atlantic sturgeon are listed as Endangered under the United States Endangered Species Act. The collapse of Atlantic sturgeon fisheries in the late 19th century—driven by demand for caviar—has never fully reversed despite decades of protection. Primary threats include bycatch in commercial gillnet and trawl fisheries, loss of spawning habitat due to dams and river modification, and water quality degradation. Recovery efforts emphasize restoring access to historical spawning habitat through dam removal, reducing fishing mortality through gear restrictions, and supplementing wild populations with hatchery-reared juveniles.
