Introduction

Weighing up to 80 kilograms and standing 50 centimeters at the shoulder, the capybara has a barrel-shaped body, blunt snout, and a remarkably calm temperament that has made it the subject of countless nature documentaries and internet memes alike. Highly social, living in groups of 10 to 40 individuals, the capybara is a keystone herbivore in South American wetlands, shaping vegetation and serving as a critical prey base for predators ranging from jaguars to spectacled caimans.

Taxonomy

The capybara belongs to the family Caviidae within the order Rodentia, making it a close relative of guinea pigs and rock cavies. The genus name Hydrochoerus is Greek for “water hog,” reflecting the animal’s semiaquatic habits and pig-like profile. Despite its superficial resemblance to pigs, the capybara’s true affinity lies with the small, terrestrial cavies of South America. Caviamorph rodents colonized South America during the Oligocene roughly 25 million years ago, with the capybara lineage growing larger over time in response to abundant grassland and wetland resources.

Physical Characteristics

The capybara is built for a life split between land and water. Its barrel-shaped body is covered in coarse, reddish-brown to grayish fur that dries quickly. The head is large with a blunt snout, small rounded ears, and high-set eyes allowing the animal to see above water while almost completely submerged — a key anti-predator adaptation. Capybaras have partially webbed feet and can stay underwater for up to five minutes. Adults measure 100 to 130 centimeters in length. A prominent gland on the snout called the morillo is especially developed in adult males and produces a greasy secretion for scent marking.

Habitat

Capybaras are found across most of South America east of the Andes, from Colombia south to Uruguay and northern Argentina. They require permanent water bodies, inhabiting riverbanks, lake margins, estuaries, marshes, and seasonally flooded savannas. The South American tapir shares many of the same wetland habitats. Seasonal flooding in the Pantanal and llanos drives capybara movements between higher and lower ground. Capybaras readily colonize human-made water bodies such as irrigation ditches and farm ponds, and they are absent only from mountainous regions and arid zones lacking permanent water.

Diet

The capybara is a strict herbivore and specialized grazer, feeding primarily on grasses and aquatic plants. During the dry season it adds fruits, melons, and agricultural crops to its diet. Like other caviids, the capybara practices coprophagy — re-ingesting specialized fecal pellets to extract additional nutrients from cellulose through fermentation in a large cecum. Capybaras feed mainly at dawn and dusk, resting in or near water during midday heat. Their grazing pressure shapes plant communities, and their role as seed dispersers adds further ecological importance.

Reproduction

Capybaras breed year-round with peaks during the rainy season. After a 150-day gestation, the female gives birth to a litter of one to eight pups — four to five being most common. Newborns are precocial: furred, eyes open, capable of eating vegetation within days. Nursing continues for about 16 weeks, and allomaternal care is common — females synchronize breeding and help tend each other’s young. Capybaras reach sexual maturity at 12 to 18 months. Juvenile mortality from predation by green anacondas, jaguars, and caimans is high, making adult survival critical to population stability.

Conservation

The capybara is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN with stable populations across most of its range. However, it faces localized pressures from agricultural expansion, wetland drainage, and competition with livestock for grazing. It is hunted for meat, hide, and fat throughout its range, and in some areas it is considered an agricultural pest. Paradoxically, the capybara often benefits from cattle ranching, as the creation of ponds and disturbed grazing lands creates new habitat. National parks and protected areas help maintain viable populations, and the species’ adaptability has so far prevented widespread decline.
